NAS: I think they deliberately wrote more than one version of the killer's reveal to keep the cast and crew guessing. I'm sure I remember reading that Richard Beymer really thought he was the killer and only realized he wasn't the day they filmed the scenes where Leland confesses. I think Lynch & Frost knew fairly early that Leland was the killer. So I doubt Ben was ever truly intended as the killer and those scripts were probably decoys. But I'd love to be proved wrong! :)
