NAS - I always thought Josie turning into a doorknob meant that her soul was trapped in the wood, much like The Log Lady's husband's. There was a scene in one of the subsequent episodes - just before Audrey got Pete to drive her to say goodbye to Jack - when Ben suddenly saw something disturbing in his office (it was never revealed what) and the next scene started with Pete staring at the wall saying he could see Josie's face. I think it would've been explored further, had the series continued.
